Cape Otway Lighthouse to Johanna Beach, 24 kms

Blessed with another day of good walking weather - mild temperature, no rain, and cloud cover with sunshine managing to break through every now and then. The grey skies may not sound ideal but we were very happy with what we got, given that we woke at 6.30 to thunder, lightning and steady rain.

By the time we'd had breakfast and visited the bakery for our coffee and take away lunch, things had already begun to improve. Mark from Walk 91 drove us back to Cape Otway Lighthouse to begin today's walk to Johanna Beach.

Just 50 metres from the start we came across the small lighthouse cemetery, a reminder of the difficult life the lighthouse keepers and their families endured. What is now a popular tourist destination was once a harsh and isolated place.

Again today we saw few hikers - just two having lunch at a campsite and another two in the far distance as we made our way down to Johanna Beach, one of the two long stretches of beach we walked today. 'Une plage infinie', says The French. By the time we were on Johanna Beach, the two walkers we'd spotted had disappeared and all that remained were their footprints.

Domi and I found the walking relaxed and easy today except for a few ascents from the beaches back to the cliff tops - but they were short and sharp climbs. Beach walking is always slow going, especially against a strong wind as we were today. But with both beaches entirely to ourselves, and the surroundings so beautiful, it was no hardship.

Tomorrow we will walk a similar distance - 24 kms - but we will finish again at Johanna Beach. We'll walk in reverse from Wreck Beach back to Johanna - so we can fit in with the Walk 91 pick ups and drop offs. As we are out of sync with their 5, 6 and 8 day schedules they asked if we would do this section in reverse. Pas de probleme. We may have to be a little more careful checking the signs, but I think I'm in good hands.

A demain
