The scenery varied from beach walking to coastal bush tracks to eucalyptus forests. A few hundred flies followed us for part of the way but thankfully they were more interested in hitching a ride on our caps and backpacks, so were not as annoying as you'd imagine.
Despite a few challenging sections, between beaches and headlands, a top temp of 22, cloud cover and a good breeze made for easy walking conditions.
We saw few hikers and two koalas - one so high in the tree we could barely capture him in a photo (we knew he was a he because it was the low groaning noise that alerted us). The second we saw at Blanket Bay campsite where he / she was sleeping peacefully, seemingly oblivious to the enthusiastic audience below.
We had planned to walk 26 kms today to Parker's Hill where the Walk 91 mini-bus would pick us up at 5. But we arrived there at 2.30 so a quick exchange of texts and a quick change of plan was agreed. We would walk on to Cape Otway Lighthouse. We still had to wait an hour but, by the time we had a mint magnum and a wander around, the hour passed quickly.
Given that we've walked a third of the 100km walk in our first day, we've re-jigged our drop offs and pick ups to finish the walk in 4 days rather than 5. We both enjoy 20-25km days, and the way we've split the distances gives us extra time at The Twelve Apostles when we arrive on Sunday afternoon and a leisurely morning in Apollo Bay on Monday before heading back to Melbourne.
We finished the day with dinner on the balcony of our apartment. We bought barramundi, calamari and chips from the fish and chip shop and added a yummy salad (from The French) and a Pinot Noir. Parfait.
Tomorrow morning the Walk 91 bus will leave here at 8.30 and deposit us back at the lighthouse to continue on our way. We are loving this adventure.
